Biography of Rev David GAY, Champaign County, Illinois

REV. DAVID GAY

Is a native of Taunton, Mass. Was born January 28th, 1812. He is the
youngest of a family of seven children of John and Joyce (FLETCHER) GAY,
who are both natives of Prince Edward's Island, where they were educated
and married, after which they moved, in 1841, to Massachusetts. Mrs. Gay
died during the latter part of 1843. Mr. Gay, who is seventy-two years of
age, is still living, and now resides on his farm, near Rushville, Schuyler
county, Ill.

Rev. David GAY received his elementary education at Fon-du-Lac, Wis., where
his father removed with his family, when he (David) was about ten years of
age. When about seventeen, he came with his parents to Payson, Adams
county, Ill., where he remained for one year, and at Barry, Pike county,
Ill., about six months. At the age of eighteen he was licensed to preach in
the Methodist Episcopal Church, and the same year united with the Illinois
Annual Conference at Jacksonville. He was first stationed at Martinsville,
Clark county, Ill.; subsequently preached at the following places: Windson,
one year; Sullivan, one year; Oakland, two years; Perry, one year; Delevan,
two years; McLean, three years; Urbana, three years; Tuscola, one year;
Paris, one year; Farmer City, one year, and in 1877 returned to Urbana, and
now has charge of the M. E. church of this city.

On the 1st of June, 1878, he became a partner and co-editor of the Urbana
Republican, in connection with Frank M. Snyder, and on the 16th of
September following, became sole proprietor.

October 14th, 1862, he was married to Miss Louisa M. GOLLOGHER, daughter of
Wesley GOLLOGHER, of Shelby county, Ill. By this union they have been
blessed with four children, all of whom are living.
