Biography of J S HANNAH, Champaign County, Illinois

J. S. HANNAH

Among the enterprising and successful farmers of Newcomb township J. S.
HANNAH justly takes his place. Actuated in his dealings with his fellows by
strict integrity his success is commendable, and his upright character has
gained him the esteem of his neighbors who know him best and appreciate him
accordingly. He was the son of David and Jane HANNAH. He was born in Clark
county, Ohio, February 18, 1817. David Hannah was a native of Virginia, and
emigrated to Ohio in an early day. The subject of our sketch was brought up
on a farm and endured all the hardships incident to a new country. His
advantages for receiving an education were very limited. Subscription
schools a few months in the winter, and a long way to walk through the mud
and snow was the process by which he acquired his education. But in after
life by his own diligence he acquired what was denied him in youth. April
13, 1844, he was united in marriage to Miss Sina J. BANES, daughter of G.
H. BANES, a resident of Logan county, Ohio. Mrs. Hannah is a woman of
intelligence, and has transmitted to her children her own traits of
excellence. In 1851, Mr. and Mrs. Hannah emigrated to this county and made
a permanent settlement on Sec. 34, where they now reside. For nearly thirty
years they have toiled and brought their wild, unbroken, uncleared land up
to a finely cultivated, productive farm, with a comfortable barn and
convenient dwellings thereon, where they are now enjoying the fruits of
their honest and well directed efforts. Around their fireside children have
gathered, some of whom have gone out therefrom to homes of their own, some
live quietly in the sunshine of the old homestead, and some have gone
forward to that land where shadows never come. They have had a family of
ten children born to them, nine of whom are living, four boys and five
girls, viz: Sarah Jane, born February 17, 1845, who died September 1, 1846.
Nancy H., born December 10, 1846, now the wife of C. E. WRIGHT. Mary A.,
horn July 21, 1849, now the wife of George WYANT. Joseph W., born January
21, 1852. Gabrilla, born April 18, 1854, now the wife of John W. MORRIS.
Martha W., born Decernber 1, 1856. Emma E., born December 1, 1859. Uriah
B., born April 14, 1862. Abraham Lincoln, born January 15, 1866. John W.,
born May 26, 1868. The latter five are living at home. In politics Mr.
Hannah is a Republican. In 1875 he was elected to represent his township in
the county board, which office he still holds. He has held the office of
Justice of the peace in his township for twenty years, also school
treasurer for twenty-five years. Religiously, he and his wife are members
of the M. E. Church. The first congregation that gathered together in the
township to hear the word of God proclaimed, assembled at the residence of
Mr. Hannah, and here for over a year the gospel was expounded to the early
settlers regularly once every month by the regular circuit rider. He is a
man well and favorably known as a good practical farmer and honest citizen,
and he and his amiable wife enjoy the respect of all with whom they have
become acquainted. An illustration of his farm can be seen elsewhere in
