Biography of Max EICHBERG, Champaign County, Illinois

MAX. EICHBERG - One of the leading merchants in Champaign, was born in
Wurtemberg, Germany, Feb. 3d, 1839, and was the youngest of a family of
nine children.  In 1851, at the age of twelve years, he, with two other
brothers, emigrated to this country and lived with his brother, Lewis
EICHBERG, in Logan county, this State.  In 1857 he went to Cincinnati,
where he attended college and was with his brothers, Lewis and Samuel, in
the wholesale business.  In 1860 he embarked in the mercantile business in
partnership with his brothers in Mexico, Missouri.  In March, 1866, he
removed to Champaign and opened the New York wholesale and retail dry goods
and carpet store.  They did a cash business and kept a large stock.  With
quick sales and small profits they did a large business, and the New York
store was soon a household word throughout Champaign county.  In 1872,
finding the store inadequate for the large business, they erected the Opera
block, No. 20 and 22 Main street.  The same year they also erected a fine
residence on University avenue.  The opera has a capacity of six hundred
chairs and the store-room is one of the largest in the city, and the
continued throng there proves the fair dealing and is appreciated by the
citizens of Champaign county.  The Eichberg brothers have a business house
in Atlanta, Illinois, and also one at Lincoln.  In 1863, Mr. Eichberg was
united in marriage to Miss Jette LANDAUER, also of German birth but living
in Cincinnati at the time of his marriage.  By this union they have had
born to them a family of seven children, viz., David (now deceased), Emma,
Belle, Flora, Lewis, Nathan William and Minnie Pearl.  Characterized by
industry and integrity, Mr. Eichberg has gained a competency of this
world's goods.  Quiet and unassuming in his manners, he has not sought
public positions of trust and honor, preferring the part of the private
citizen, whose duties he has at all times striven to fulfill, and the high
regard and esteem in which he is held by his fellow-townsmen give evidence
that he has not been unsuccessful in his endeavors to fill his desired
place in life.
