Biography of George W M PITTMAN, Champaign County, Illinos

GEORGE W. M. PITTMAN was born in Butler county, Ohio, on the 11th day 
of September, 1847.  His father, George PITTMAN, was born in New 
Jersey, and settled in Ohio at a very early age.  He married a lady 
by the name of Eliza BOKE, of Butler county, Ohio.  Nine children 
were born to them, of whom six are still living.  Dubois PITTMAN, one 
of the sons, enlisted in the 126th Regt. Illinois Volunteers, at the 
beginning of the great Rebellion, and was mortally wounded at the 
battle of Kenesaw Mountain, dying a few days later.  The family left 
Ohio in 1856, and settled near Mahomet, in this county, in October of 
the same year, where the father engaged in farming, which business he 
followed until a few years since, when he retired from active life. 
He and his wife are both alive, and living near the village of 
Mahomet.  The subject of our sketch attended school at Mahomet during 
the winter of 1859 and '60, and in the fall of 1861 entered Illinois 
Wesleyan University, at Bloomington.  Here he remained but six 
months.  In January, 1863, he entered Asbury University, Greencastle, 
Indiana, and completed a classical course, graduating from the 
institution on the 27th day of June, 1867.  He then attended the 
Michigan University law-school at Ann Arbor, for one year, after 
which he obtained a position as instructor in the Methodist Academy, 
Danville, Ind., and taught for one year, at the same time pursuing 
his legal studies under the direction of Col.             .  In the 
summer of 1869 he was licensed to practice law in Indiana, his 
examination taking place at Terre Haute.  However, he never engaged 
in the practice in Indiana, but came to this city and perfected 
himself in his legal studies.  He was admitted to practice in the 
courts of this State in 1873.  He opened his office in Champaign, 
July, 1874, and has continued the practice up to the present time. 
Mr. Pittman is a Republican in politics, and cast his first vote for 
U. S. Grant in 1868, and has adhered strictly to the fortunes and the 
party in its perpetuation ever since.  Mr. Pittman as a lawyer, ranks 
already as one of the best at the bar of Champaign county.  He is a 
clear, logical thinker, a fine pleader, and a gentleman of pleasing 
address, and with these united to an untiring energy, it is only a 
question of time when he will take a front rank in his profession. 
In his habits he is temperate, and adheres rigidly to those habits 
which insure a sound mind and a sound body.  It is with pleasure that 
we present this brief biographical sketch of Mr. Pittman to the 
citizens of Champaign county.  A portrait of the gentleman 
accompanies this sketch.
