Biography of J H MOORE, Champaign County, Illinois

J. H. MOORE - One of the editors and proprietors of the Champaign 
Union, was born in Troy, Ohio, February 21, 1837, and is the second 
of three boys, of John L. MOORE, D. D., and Nancy (GREEN) MOORE.  The 
Rev. J. D. MOORE, a native of N. Y., was a Baptist clergyman.  He 
graduated at Hamilton University, N. Y., and came to Ohio, where he 
spent forty years in evangelical work.  He is known in every school 
district of the state, and the good work he established will go on. 
He moved to Kansas, locating twelve miles north-west of Topeka, where 
he lived for five years, and until his death, January 23,1878.  He 
died in the seventy-fourth year of his age, having been engaged in 
the divine work for almost half a century.  His wife died in 
November, 1858.  The great-grandfather of Dr. Moore, settled in 
Conn., prior to the Revolutionary war.  The family is of English 
descent.  Mr. J. H. Moore, our subject, received his education 
principally at Wittenburg College, Springfield, Ohio.  He also 
attended the Dennison University at Granville, Ohio.  After leaving 
school, he learned the printing business, at Springfield, Ohio, where 
he remained until September, 1859, when he came to Bloomington, Ill., 
and worked in the office of the Daily Pantagraph until August, 1862, 
at which time he enlisted in company A of the 94th Regiment of 
Illinois Volunteers.  Remained in the service three years; was 
honorably discharged at the expiration of his term of service.  The 
principal battle in which he participated was at Prairie Grove, 
Arkansas.  Soon after this he was detailed and served in the 
quartermaster's department.  On his return to Bloomington, Il., after 
the war he resumed his trade with the Wakefield Printing 
Establishment, until November, 1872, then purchased an interest in 
the Bloomington Republican.  In May, 1873, he established the 
Observer, at Rossville, Ill., however retaining his interest in the 
Bloomington Republican until the following August.  He remained at 
Rossville, until May, 1877, at which time he sold The Observer, came 
to this city, and purchased an interest in the Champaign Union, with 
which paper he is now concerned.  Mr. Moore was married January 11th, 
1859, to Miss Hannah DAVIDSON, daughter of Joseph and Ann DAVIDSON, 
or Springfield, Ohio.  By this union they have two children, one 
daughter and one son.  Mr. Moore and wife are members of the Baptist 
church.  In politics, Mr. Moore is identified with the National 
Greenback party.
