This area was settled by German immigrants and many of the gravestones are in German. Children are buried on the west side of the cemetery and the adults are buried on the east side of the cemetery. Take note that some children are buried on the adult side of the cemetery, but the ages of the children seem to be at least age 12. The area is well fenced and well maintained. I have included transcriber notes in {this type of parenthesis in italics}. These notes are from over 50 years of research into my own family history. I have photographed each stone in this cemetery. The list is in alphabetical order not in grave location. I have, however, listed all inscriptions on the same stone together with bullet marks preceding them. One of which is on the children’s side of the cemetery with the name GEORGE only. It has been broken off the tope of a stone. There are three other stones that are bracing several pieces of broken stones at other monuments. They do not appear to belong to the monuments they are at. However, they are embedded in the ground and it was not possible to read them at this time. Several other pieces of stone are stacked under the small stone that said GEORGE. I am wondering if they are all part of one stone or of several markers. There was only one stone unidentifiable on the adult side of the cemetery. Only the footing remained with several shell shaped pieces setting on it. I also found the same shell pieces on the Diebold Schnepp monument. This cemetery was desecrated by an act of vandalism in the about 15 or 20 years ago. A large article was written about the vandalism in the Taylorville Breeze Courier. I currently do not have a copy of the article to retrieve the exact date. Most of the ornamental ball ornaments on the monuments have been broken off. Many still remain next to the monuments. Only two of the large monuments are broken off, but the pieces remain next to the footings. http://files.usgwarchives.net/il/christian/cemeteries/achenbach.txt
