He had taken off the grip and was letting the cars run by force of gravity down a light grade when he fell from the seat and the first car ran on him. On inspection a trip of cars was brought down the same grade; 32 feet before reaching the place where Leyford was picked up the gripper was severely shaken; the ball of both rails was broken in several places. It is evident that Leyford was shaken off the seat and pushed by the cars to the place where he was found.
