The cager on the opposite side of the shaft was pushing a loaded car to the cage, when the corner of the car struck the upright corner rod of the cage. Westbrook immediately stepped on the cage and was pushing the car back, when, without any signal from the bottom, the cage started up, taking Mr. Westbrook with it, crushing him against the crown timber, causing instant death.
