Walker Hancock. He was the oldest son of eight sisters and one brother. His father Andrew left to serve in the Civil War in 1862. On his return, George and a neighbor boy rean away from home and enlisted int he Union Army. He served one year as a messenger, forager and buglar and was honorably discharged at Camp Nelson, KY on 10 Jan. 1865. George married Mary Jane Ross in 1868. Migrating to Illinois in 1873, their only child, Ida Frances, was born on the trail. They settled near his widowed mother Rebecca and his siblings at Mechanicsburg, IL. Mary Jane died in childbirth in 1875 and George married Margaret Elizabeth Walker. They had six children: Martha Jane, Rebecca Etter, William Mervin, George Benjamin, James Lee and Minnie. They farmed near Mt. Auburn and Blue Mound. After Margaret died, George married Mary Etta Smart who helped raise his seven children. George continued to farm and garden and collected a Civil War pension for 75 years. At age 94, he died of natural causes at the home of his daughter, Ida Hancock Waterman at Morrisonville. The Breeze Courier noted in his obituary that he "was one of the country's last boys in blue." George was buried at Mechanicsburg Cemetery with full military honors. Additional Comments: George Taylor Hancock was my great-grandfather. He was a man of honor and always kept his word. Reading the bible was included in his daily routine. I will never forget the full 21 gun salute at his funeral.
