All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarch.org/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarch.org/il/ilfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Cindy McCachern mccachern@sbcglobal.net Sheriff Wallace Captures Notorious Character 18 July 1918, Clark County (IL) Democrat Earl Jeffers of Terre Haute, a notorious character wanted at Sullivan, Indiana, on a charge of being connected with a gang of alleged thieves, was arrested here Sunday by Sheriff Wallace and Deputy Elliot, and landed in jail. He was found at the home of his mother, Mrs. Sam Shiverly, where the arrest was made. Jeffers' wife, who was with him at the time, hastened to Terre Haute and returned later in the day with Attorneys Blankenbaker and Owens and a $3000 cash bond, fixed by Esq. Craig, was given and the parties returned to Terre Haute. As soon as the arrest was made, the Sullivan sheriff was notified, but delays prevented him from reaching Marshall until midnight, too late to get his man. Jeffers was taken by his attorneys to Sullivan to answer the charge against him, and where it was expected bond could be arranged, but at last account he had been unable to give bond and was kept in jail.
