Buchanan 2 November 1899, Clark County (IL) Herald Mason F. Buchanan died at his home in Auburn Sunday morning at four o'clock. He had been gradually growing weaker for several years from the decay of the vital forces consequent upon the increasing weight of years. The burial took place Monday morning at ten o'clock in the cemetery at Auburn, a short service being held at the grave. Mr. Buchanan was born November 25, 1810, in Breckinridge county, Kentucky. Here he grew to manhood and learned the shoemaker's trade. About 1830 he located in Sullivan county, Ind., and October 4, 1833, he married Miss Eliza Walls, who survives him. He built the first house in what is now the city of Sullivan, Indiana, and lived there about twelve years, following his trade. From there he moved to Clark county and located on Dolson prairie. He afterward moved to Auburn and for a number of years he carried on the boot and shoe business in that place. He then moved near Hammond's mill. Several years since he came back to Auburn, where he remained till the time of his death. He was a very industrious man and when his sight became so dim he could no longer pursue his trade, he took up basket making, which he followed as long as he was able to work. He joined the United Brethren church over thirty years ago and has ever held fast to that faith. He was the father of five sons and two daughters.
