Wiles Coons February 1906, Clark County (IL) Herald Mary E., wife of Rev. W. C. Coons, formerly of this county but who for two years has been stationed at Odin, died at her home there Friday, Feb. 23, from heart failure, brought on by an extended illness from rheumatism. She had appeared to be better for several days before her death and the end came rather suddenly. The remains were brought to this city Saturday night. Following is an obituary contributed by a friend. On April 18, 1872, as the beautiful flowers were budding, one came into this world seemingly the most beautiful. It grew up into sweet childhood and when womanhood was reached many were the admirers of her, but one wooed and wooed her and she changed from Mary E. Wiles to Mary E. Coons. Wm. S. Coons seeing no brighter jewel for a helpmate in life, joined with her on March 22, 1891. To this happy bond five bright and beautiful children came into this world to bless them, two having preceded the mother to the other home. For some reason, we know not why--for death is a mystery yet unsolved--death took her from home, from husband, and children and relatives, yet knowing her to be a true Christian woman, we believe she has only gone on before, not to that eternal reward but to that rest that awaits every Christian until the angel shall declare "that time shall be no more," then she will be called from the sleeping dead to enter into that joy prepared for all those that forget not God. Sister Coons was a member of the M. P. church and had that true Christian spirit that called her to the work of the master. Her work in the Sunday Schools of Clark county will never be forgotten. She was superintendent of the Cradle Roll department and it was her soul's delight to gather the little ones in. But while she loved and tried to bear the burdens of her husband and church, she was smitten by pain and this pain caused death and on February 23, 1906, she bid all farewell and took that journey from which no traveler returns. A short funeral service was held at the home of Shelton Davis in the southeast part of the city Sunday. From there she was taken to Auburn where other funeral services were held by Elder Reed of Paris and a few well chosen words were read from the county President of the Sunday School Association, L. B. Anderson, and remarks by J. A. Sweet, secretary. Her body was laid to rest in the Auburn cemetery to await that call when the dead in Christ shall be raised.
