Gard, was born at Graitot, Licking county, Ohio, July 25, 1858, and came with his parents to Melrose township, Clark county, Illinois, when three years old, where he resided until his death July 12, 1936, at the age of 77 years, 11 months and 17 days. On October 6, 1884, the deceased was married to Miss Fannie M. Denzer, who survives him.  This couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in October 1934. To this union were born seven children, five of whom are living.  An infant daughter, Fannie M., and a small son, Benton M., have passed on.  Of the children surviving, three are sons, Carroll and R. H. of West Union and Walter Gard of Terre Haute, Ind.  The two daughters are Mrs. William Imle of Marshall and Miss Adah Gard of Chicago, Illinois. In addition, the deceased is survived by a sister, Mrs. Rowena Bartlett of West Union, Ill., and a brother, H. V. Gard of Superior, Wisconsin. While quite a young man, Alex Gard entered politics.  He filled many township offices, such as collector for two terms, and supervisor for many terms.  He filled these offices well, and for many years was known as the wheel-horse of the democratic party of the state of Melrose. Alex enjoyed a large acquaintance.  He was a good neighbor, a kind husband and an indulgent father. Many years ago he became a member of the York lodge No. 313, A. F. A. M. West Union, Illinois.  The Masons were in charge of the funeral services.  Rev. Starwalt was the minister. This active citizen will not only be missed by his sorrowing family, but by his neighbors--all his neighbors and numerous friends.
