He was left an orphan at an early age, making his home with “Uncle” Joe Smith until he grew to manhood. He had one sister, Lola, who died in infancy. He was united in marriage to Lydia Zane Spangler, February 23, 1894, and to this union were born three sons, harry, of West Union, Joe, of Beaumont, Texas, survive him and Virgil, who preceded him in death. He lived on his farm in Melrose Township until 1917, when he moved to West Union. Here he became connected with the First State Bank in the capacity of bookkeeper, when he became afflicted with his fatal illness in July, 1926 and was Vice President of the bank at the time of his death. He was held in high esteem by his fellowmen, having served two terms as supervisor of his home township, and also clerk and collector. He always held sacred the confidence placed in him by the public. He was public spirited, always willing to lend a hand to anything that might benefit his home community. He was a member of the Odd Fellow and Red Men lodges. He did not belong to any church but expressed himself as feeling safe and not fearing the end. He expressed this to one of the pastors of the churches of West Union. A pastor whom the writer knows he considered a dear friend. Ed, as we all knew him, had one particular virtue, which few men possess. That was, he never spoke ill of anyone, be he friend or foe. He was a loving father, a faithful husband, a good neighbor and this community has lost an excellent citizen, who will be sadly missed by his many friends. He leaves to mourn their loss besides the widow and two sons, one sister, Mrs. Nellie Alexander, of Paris, Ill, five grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in West Union, conducted by Rev. T. J. Wheeler. Burial at the Ohio cemetery in Melrose township.
