Obituary of John Edward Melton

6 September 1905, Clark County (IL) Herald


John Edward Melton was born in Harrison county, Ind., Jan. 8,
1864, and died at his home in Orange township, Clark county,
Augu. 30, 1905, aged 40 years, 8 months and 22 days.  He was
married to Rebecca Catharine Thomas of Georgetown, Ind., July
5, 1881.  To this union was born five children four of whom
survive.

After this marriage, they lived in Indiana about one year and
a half.  Moving to Texas, they lived there about four years
then returning to Indiana and lived there four years then came
to Illinois where they lived until his death.

Bro. Melton was converted and united with the church at New
Salisbury, Ind., in young manhood; but owing to the class
going down shortly afterwards, he was not received into full
connection until January 1895 when he came into the Wesley
chapel M. E. church on the Martinsville circuit.  He was a
member of the I. O. O. F. also Court of Honor.  He was sick
about 6 months with dropsy of the heart during which time he
was a great suffere, but bore his suffering with much patience
and christian fortitude.

From the time he first united with the church, Brother Melton
was a faithful christian.  He was a good neighbor, honest and
upright in all his dealings.  A kind husband and loving
father.  He will be greatly missed, especially in this home
circle.  He leaves to mourn their loss besides those already
mentioned one sister and three brothers.

The funeral services were conducted under the auspices of the
I. O. O. F. and Court of Honor lodges in the Wesley chapel M.
E. church Aug. 31, 1905.  Rev. Tharp preached the sermon.  The
interment was in the Wesley cemetery.
