He had been suffering with appendicitis and also stomach trouble for over a year; and these maladies weakened him that he could not combat the later disease that attacked him. John Charles, eldest child of Wesley and Martha Perdue, was born in Westfield on August 14, 1863. The family moved to Marshall 21 years ago. On October 27, 1886, Charles married Miss Etta Metz, who, with six of the seven children born to them, survive him. In 1894 Charles was elected county superintendent of schools. He served the full term and was then elected county judge in 1898. Early in 1902, he resigned the judgeship to take charge of the post office which he held at the time of his death. Deceased was a member of the Methodist church, joining under Rev. H. L. Murray's pastorate in 1898. He was a member of the Masonic order and was Worshipful Master of the Marshall lodge several terms; also belonged to the Odd Fellows, Red Men, Knights of Pythias and Court of Honor. He was quite prominent in the state work of the latter order a few years ago and took a leading part in the revision of the secret work of the order. He possessed a cheerful disposition that won him many friends. He was devoted to his home and family and with them he found his deepest pleasure.
