ROWE OBITUARY, CLARK COUNTY (IL) HERALD - 1907 6-Feb-1907 J.W. Rowe was born at New Amsterdam, Harrison County, Indiana, January 28, 1850. He came to Illinois in 1867 and to Martinsville in 1869. He has lived here ever since with the exception of an interval of about eleven years spent at Melrose. He was married to Sophia A. Miller, June 12, 1866. Of this union there was born one son who died in infancy. In the winter of 1876 and 1877, he united with the Church of God and was baptized into Christ by Elder R.T. Sargent. In the following spring, he moved to Melrose where he assisted in organizing a Sunday School which resulted in the organization of the church there. Into these two organizations he threw his whole energies and with his good companion was moving spirit in all their advancement. Since returning to Martinsville he was member of the church board and active in all departments of her work up to the time ill health rendered him too feeble a few months ago. He died January 24, 1907, at the age of 56 years, 11 months and 26 days. Editor Herald-Mr. Rowe established the news in Martinsville in 1904 and although he had no previous experience in the newspaper business, was fairly successful. He was actively engaged with the paper until his health became so poor a few months ago that he was compelled to give it up. The bereaved companion has our sincere sympathy.
