All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarch.org/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarch.org/il/ilfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Cindy McCachern mccachern@worldnet.att.net Obituary of Lemuel Sears 31 November 1904, Clark County (IL) Herald Lemuel Sears was born in Muskingum county, Ohio, Jan. 9, 1844, and departed this life at his late home in Marshall, Ill, Nov. 25, 1904, aged 60 years, 10 months and 16 days. He came to Illinois in 1850, when only six years of age and settled near Livingston in Clark county. Here he grew to manhood and when the Civil War broke out, he offered his services to his country and continued through to the end and was honorably discharged at the close in 1864. During his last years, he received a pension as a reward for such gallant service and hardships endured. August 23, 1866, he united in marriage to Miss Ellen Dempster, who has been to him a faithful helpmeet, and now, in her declining years, will miss her companion all the more. There were born to them of this union five children--Harry, deceased, Edward, Mrs. Emma Elliott, Bessie deceased, and Mrs. Adeline Stepp. Those living and married and occupy homes of their own but will be a comfort to the mother. Mr. Sears health began to fail about two years ago and on account of which he thought it best to retire from active life on the farm where he had lived for twenty-five years and move to Marshall and enjoy a much earned rest, which he did last April, but his health continued to decline until the end came as above stated. In his early life he united with the Methodist church but was not received in full but declared that he never lost his love for Christ his Savior. When visited by the writer a few days before his death, he said he was trusting in his Savior and had no fears for the future. He was honest and upright, in all his dealings with his fellow men and was loved and respected by his neighbors. Besides his wife and children, he leaves three brothers to mourn his death, Leroy of Wabash township, William of Terre Haute, and Lincoln of Wabash. The funeral services were conducted Sunday, Nov. 27 at 1:30 p.m. from the Livingston M. E. church by Rev. W. M Hailey in the presence of a large congregation of his old neighbors and friends.
