He there grew to manhood and in 1850 was married to Ann Eliza Schaeffer. After marriage the couple continued to reside in Ohio until 1863 when they came west and settled on a farm in Anderson township. The family resided on a farm for sev years and then moved to Marshall. About twelve years ago, the family moved to Terre Haute where they have since resided. Mr. Schmachtenberger was a carpenter and builder by trade. He followed this occupation nearly all his life. While he resided in Marshall, he built a number of nice houses here. During a part of the time he lived in this city, he conducted a lumber yard and during his residence in Terre Haute he followed the same business. Our subject was a man of strong constitution but of late years he was afflicted with Bright's disease which caused his death on Dec. 19 after being confined to his bed only a few days. The funeral was conducted at his residence on the afternoon of the 21st and the remains were interred in Woodlawn cemetery. Besides his aged wife, the deceased left the following children: Jariah who has a family and lived in Anderson township; Mrs. Ed Garwood who resides in Marshall; Ottomer, who has a family and resides at Roodhouse, Ill.; and Ira and Misses Margaret and Eva who reside at home. One child died in infancy. The deceased was an honest, industrious, christian gentleman. In early life he belonged to the Lutheran church but when he came to this county there was no church of this denomination close, and he then joined the Christian church of which he was a faithful member for more than thirty years.
