She had been sick only a few days of pneumonia and rheumatism, and her death came as a great shock to all. The remains reached here at 6 o'clock p. m. of the same day and were taken to the home of Mrs. A. M. Payne, only sister of the deceased. The funeral services were held there Saturday morning, Rev. W. E. Murray officiating. Interment was in Marshall cemetery. Mary Harlan was born in Marshall on March 20, 1844. She was the daughter of Judge Justin and Lucinda Harlan. She grew to womanhood in the town of her birth and in May 1868, she married W. A. Wright. The young couple spent the first three years of their married life in Dennison, where Mr. Wright had charge of a mill. From there they removed to Kuttawa, Ky, where they made their home until the death of Mr. Wright, which occurred in March 1887. She then returned to Marshall, which she called her home to the end, though the past eight years were spent in the Soldiers' Orphans' Home in Normal. Entering as superintendent of the sewing room, she was steadily advanced until when she died she was matron of one of the cottages. She was eminently fitted for the work in the Home. Denied maternity herself, the motherly instinct was yet so strong in her breast that she took the helpless orphans of the noble men who gave their lives freely in defense of the nation into her great warm heart and they all loved her dearly. Deep is the grief of all in that great institution for they feel that they have lost one near and dear to them. In 1890 Mrs. Wright gave her heart to the Master, uniting with the Presbyterian church. Her life was a reflex of the hope and trust within her heart. To the stricken relatives, she leaves as a heritage the memory of a noble life spent in good works for the Master and his little ones. Mrs. Wright is survived by one sister, Mrs. A. M. Payne, and six brothers, Cyrus, William, Howard, Edwin, Wilson and Justin. Howard lives in Pimento, Ind., and Justin in Kuttawa, Ky. The others all live in Marshall. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/il/clark/obits/w/mhwright.txt File size: 2 Kb
