His father was one of the early pioneers of Clark county coming her with his family in 1830. Mr. Whitehead was educated in the schools of this county and was a student at Marshall academy. He read law in the office of Judge John Scholfield and was admitted to the bar in 1862, and continued in the active practice of law until four years ago when he retired and went to his farm. In 1853 he was elected to the office of school commissioner which he held for five successive terms. In 1864 he was elected to the office of States Attorney for the district composed of Clark, Cumberland, Effingham, Shelby, Coles and Edgar counties and was re-elected again in 1868. In 1856 Mr. Whitehead purchased the Eastern Illinoisan. He had edited that paper in the campaign preceding and now came into ownership. Several gentlemen were associated with him at various times until 1861 when he sold to H. H. Peyton. Peyton soon enlisted inthe army, however, and Mr. Whitehead again assumed control until 1865 when he sold to John Littlefield, who ceased publication. The paper was revived in 1878 and the year following Mr. Whitehead again bought it and continued it till 1891. Mr. Whitehead was a very forceful writer and a deep thinker. In the early fifties, he, in company with Nathan Willard, established the Enquirer of Evansville, which continues to this day, although the name has been changed to Courier. In Mr. Whitehead's early life he taught school for many years. He also served as police magistrate for some time. Mr. Whitehead was married to Miss Theresa E. Wood in Marshall Feb. 12, 1857. The surviving children are Frank E., of LaPorte, Ind., Margaret E. Berger of Streater, Ill., Geo. W. of Henderson, Ky., Ben G., of goshen, Ind., Mrs. Mary E. Behner of this city and Richard J. of Champaign. After his death the remains were brought to this city to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Behner, from which place the funeral services were held Friday morning Jan. 13, conducted by Rev. W. M. Hailey. A select choir from the Congregational church furnished the music. The Odd Fellows had charge of the services from the house and buried him with the honors of the order. A large number of his old friends were present, among them Capt. Harlan, who spoke feelingly of his long acquaintance and close friendship with the deceased. We wish to express as well as words may our appreciation of the kind attentions shown us during the obsequies of our deceased father, and of the many kindnesses of his late neighbors in Melrose township during his illness.
