Address: Clay City, IL “I was acquainted with NATHAN MARTIN for twelve or fourteen years prior to his death he being a resident of the Village during that time and I being his family physician. But I do not remember of ever treating himself or other members of the family frequently. The aforesaid NATHAN MARTIN was dissipated-i.e.- he was fond of intoxicating liquors and spent a great deal of his daily earnings for the same and wasted a great deal of this time in saloons. His family at the same time being dependent upon his daily labor for a living of maintenance.” “State of Illinois- County of Clay MARGARET ANN MARTIN, Mother of JAMES B. MARTIN December 20th, 1887 SIMON DUNN, age 41 years, resident of Clay City, IL MARGARET A. MARTIN I have known MARGARET A. MARTIN for 20 years….in the fall of 1867 the said NATHAN MARTIN and MARGARET ANN MARTIN moved from Mt. Erie, Wayne Co, ILLS to Clay City, at that time he owned some personal property. He had at that time one old horse worth about $20.00 and some household goods worth about $50.00 and no other property, and that he at the same time traded for a lot with a log cabin on it. Th house and the lot was worth about $50.00 and no other property real or personal that his wife the claimant owned no property real or personal that they live in this property until he died in 1881. The said NATHAN MARTIN worked around for any one that he could get work from by the job or days’ work at chopping wood and other work and thazt he would earn from 50-75 cents per day and from his earnings he spent the most of it at the saloon for liquor. He spent a great deal of his time and the most of his earnings on hard drink. That his wife MARGARET A. MARTIN was at times almost destitute of food and clothing. She lived (?illegible) her husband took some provision home and they used it together from 1867 to 1881. She was dependent principally upon her own labor and earnings for her support and upon her neighbors. And when he died he had no property except the lot and the log cabin and about $28.00 worth of household goods since his death she has been totally disabled and dependent upon her daughter MALINDA CREWS at Fairfield for her maintenance who is a widow woman with 4 or 5 children to support. All of these statements are made from personal knowledge close neighbor oi the family each month and year since 1867, to his death in 1881 and since except since 1884 at which time she went to her daughters’ at Fairfield, ILLS. MARGARET A. MARTIN, Mother of JAMES B. MARTIN deceased…………. …that he died unmarried leaving no widow, child, or children as his heirs surviving. That his Father NATHAN MARTIN is also dead. …….that he constantly supported his Mother and sisters buying groceries, dry goods, meat, coffee, tea, sugar, and other household articles for his Mother…… …that the said MARGARET A. MARTIN is now a widow and has been since the tenth day of November, AD 1881 at which time her husband NATHAN MARTIN died in the town of Clay City, ILLS….. MARTIN died from the effects of a wound received while in the US service in the Regimental hospital at Helena, ARK Oct. 28, 1862 said wound received in Old Town Ridge, ARK. On 22nd day Oct. 1862……her husband, the aforesaid NATHAN MARTIN aged 72 years died at Clay City, ILLS on the 10th day of November, AD 1881, and she has not remarried since the death of NATHAN MARTIN her husband. ……..survivng at the date of said son’s death his brothers and sisters under 16 years of age: MARGARET A. MARTIN was born August 14, 1829 MARGARET A. MARTIN was born July 9, 1852 AMERICA MARTIN was born May 9, 1850 MARGARET ANN MARTIN , Mother of JAMES B. MARTIN was born April 10, 1811 I also find written in same Bible the following: Bought of BENJAMIN MABRY by JAMES B. MARTIN 1856 (meaning that JAMES B. MARTIN the son of NATHAN MARTIN and MARGARET ANN MARTIN had bought the Bible and had presented it to his Mother) JOHN W. COULTER (or CULTER??)
