C. Crites of Monroe township at a crossing one mile north of Flora, instantly killing Mr. Crites, aged 50, Mrs. Crites, aged 45, and their youngest daughter, Ruth, aged 3. Another daughter, Dorothy, aged 7, was fatally injured. The family was returning from a visit to friends in the country. When the carriage was near the crossing, the engineer states, the horse became frightened and ran away. Mr. Crites, losing control, slackened the lines and let the animal run, thinking he would cross the danger point before the train reached the spot. The carriage and the train, however, met at the crossing. The carriage and its occupants were thrown thirty feet. The dead were terribly mangled.
