Nineteenth Annual Report of the Illinois Bureau of Labor Statistics, 1900
January 12, 1900, Jacob Opplinger, top laborer, aged 49 years, married, employed 
at the Consolidated Coal Company’s mine, at Trenton, was killed by being run over 
by a railroad car. He was trying to put a block in front of a loaded car, which 
was being taken out from the screen to make room for
an empty car. It is supposed that he stumbled and fell In front of the wheels, 
which passed over his neck, killing him instantly. There was no one near when the 
accident happened. He leaves a widow and five children.
