When we read PARKER CEMETERY in 1972,this cemetery had not been cleaned in several months. We tried readingin rows; but that was impossible. Background information: Parkers settled near what is today the Coles Clark County Line in 1820's. Prior to 1900 a perpetual care fund was established at bank. Have not been able to find out if bank in Charleston, Coles County, Illinois or in Westfield, Clark County, Illinos. If it was the bank in Westfield, that bank failed in THE GREAT DEPRESSION of the 1930's. When Muriel and Luke Tippett went to verify the readings done by Henry A. Tippett, Ollie Hutton, "Bud" Hutton, and myself, they were infuriated at the condition of the cemetery. Muriel was very instrumental in getting a grant for cleaning of this same cemtery. Do not know if grant was state, local, or federal. Over the years, various organizations especially the Boy Scouts as well as many individuals have attempted to clean the cemetery at a minimum of once a year. However, even that has fallen by the wayside. Sincerely, RUTH (GILBERT) TIPPETT GLENNA RUTH (TIPPETT) MULLEN [Above was electronically transcribed from a document provided to me by one of the Tippetts. An effort has been made to preserve the intent of the original, but it has been modified for Internet publication. I am a descendent of J.A.L. Parker. If you have questions, I can be contacted at tdhintz@comsquared.com. As of spring 1997, the cemetery is not maintained and lilies, trees, and brush have overrun it. Someone began to clear the trees, and many of these have been cut and piled in the center of the cemetery over old marble stones adding to the hazard of breakage. Apparently a Cox boy working at the clearing died at the site and no one has attempted to complete the effort. The Parker cemetery contains the original founders of Parker's Pairie. This important historical landmark is quickly deteriorating. If you are interested in helping preserve the cemetery, please write Coles Co lending your support. /Stacy Hintz] http://files.usgwarchives.net/il/coles/cemeteries/parker.txt
