Horace S. Clark died in Mattoon after an illness extending over a period of eighteen months of stomach trouble. Gen. Clark was one of the prominent figures in Republican politics in that section. He was a candidate for the Republican nomination for Governor in 1892 and again in 1894. In 1900 he was a candidate on the Republican ticket for Congress in the old Seventeenth District and was defeated by Joseph Crowley. He was department commander of the Illinois Grand Army of the Republic in 1891 and 1892. He is survived by a widow and two sons, Russell A. Clark of Chicago and Horace W. Clark of Mattoon, and one daughter, Mrs. C. H. Tillotson of Mattoon. At the time of his death he was judge of the City Court.
