He was graduated at Yale, A.B., 1889; B.D., 1892; was a fellow of the University of Chicago, 1892-3, receiving the degree A.M. from it in 1893. He was a student of sociology at Hull House social settlement, Chicago, 1893-7, pastor in Chicago, 1894-7, and a student at Oxford, England, in 1898. He was married in 1898 to Alice Reid of Lake Forest, Ill.; served as director of the Students Christian settlement in Paris, and as acting president of the American Art Association of Paris, 1898-9. He was an instructor in sociology and director of the university settlement work in the University of Chicago, 1899-1900, and president and professor of sociology in Illinois college from 1900.
