  Bates, James Benjamin, Shipbuilder of 175 West Jackson Boulevard, was born
April 22, 1842, in Windsor, N. S. In 1869 he entered the shipbuilding business;
and in 1892 established the firm of J. B. Bates and Company, of which he was
senior partner.
