He acquired an academic education, was graduated from Williams college in 1838, and taught school until 1848, when he took up his residence in Chicago, Ill., where he was a bookseller and publisher. He was one of the founders of the Daily Democratic Press in 1852, which was consolidated with the Chicago Tribune in 1858, and at the time of his death was president of the Tribune association. From 1865 to 1869 he was lieutenant-governor of Illinois, and in that capacity signed the thirteenth amendment to the constitution of the United States, on behalf of the state, which was the first of all the states to adopt that amendment. He was a staunch adherent of the Republican party and a speaker of some prominence in its behalf. He made generous gifts to Lake Forest university, and was a trustee and at the time of his death president of the council of that institution. He travelled extensively, and was a member of various scientific and other bodies, including the Chicago historical society. He published: A History of Chicago (1876); Immortality (1877); A History of Camp Douglas (1878); Punishment, Chicago, and Her Future Growth (1880); The Winfield Family (1882), and Illinois, and the Thirteenth Amendment (1884).
