Old Settlers Cemetery, Cook County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 1999 Brian Litteral Old Settlers Cemetery Located in present-day Berkeley, Cook County, IL As recorded and translated by Brian Litteral. All rights are reserved by the Author. The Old Settlers Cemetery was formerly known as the Bohlander Family Burial Grounds. The property was donated by Peter Bohlander in 1845 for the use of family, friends and neighbors. The cemetery is at the SE corner of St. Charles Road and Taft Avenue in Berkeley, IL. It has many graves that are merely marked by wooden crosses, blank stones, plants or barely marked at all. I suspect that there are many more graves there that have no markings whatsoever. Many of the graves have no markings or identifying information. Most of the inscriptions are in German. I have attempted to translate them here to the best of my very limited ability. My apologies for any errors in translation or transcription. Between the sometimes illegible letters, the gothic lettering and subtleties of translation, I can offer no guarantees as to the accuracy of my work. My comments are in square brackets with asterisks '[*** ***]', inscriptions and their translations are in double quotes. Names are in approximate alphabetical order, grouped according to proximity, headstones or apparent family groupings.
