For these several years the activities have consisted of luncheon meetings two or three times a month except during the Summer months. Nationally known men in the scientific fields of soil improvement, agriculture, stock raising, pastures, etc., are the speakers, and often illustrate their talks with slides and motion pictures. The attendance at these noonday meetings averaged close to 20% of the membership, which shows how thoroughly the members were interested, not alone in the professors and scientists, but in the experience of their fellow members as brought out in the luncheon "small talk" at the tables and questions asked immediately after each lecture. These addresses, heard and summarized by an experienced newspaperman trained in agriculture give in condensed form the high points of what speakers say. These summaries are published in a monthly bulletin for the benefit of those members who were unable to attend the meetings, and to refresh the memories of those who were present—also, affording a file for future reference. These monthly bulletins carry additional information deemed to be of service to the members, and a sale and exchange list of products by members who have surplus for sale. This has been of substantial service. Thousands of dollars worth of purebred live stock and equipment is sold yearly in this manner. Provision is made whereby, for a slight additional fee, $2.00 per year, extra copies will be mailed direct to a farm manager or tenant when the member desires this done. Various committees have worked on marketing problems. Small groups of members, located near each other, have maintained a joint buying service, and still others have created "breeding rings" where dairy cows are bred to bulls of above average merit by artificial insemination. The Chicago Farmers have given encouragement to such plans by groups of members; but they are not official functions of the Association, which assumes no legal or financial responsibility for such ventures. State and Federal measures which affect farm operations have been explained, but only from a factual standpoint, as political discussion is taboo. The sound service rendered by The Chicago Farmers to members is evidenced by its growth. Members are now 638 in number, all paid, for any one who does not pay his dues by April 1st,—within 90 days from time due,—is automatically dropped from membership. Our directories are sought after by salesmen and other commercial interests who may attempt to contact our Members by letters and personal solicitation. Do not let it become the source of a nuisance to your fellow Members.
