Mulford died early yesterday morning at his residence at Oakton, in the town of Evanston, aged 84 years. Major Mulford was born in New Jersey in the year 1792. He was one of the oldest citizens of Cook County, and an early history was identified with local politics. At an early age he removed from New Jersey to Chautauqua, N. Y., where, about the time of the troubles of 1812, he acquired the name of "Major" through his connection with the militia service. In 1834 he came to Chicago, and three years later pre- empted two sections of land in what was then almost a swamp, which now embraces the site of the village of South Evanston. Since that time he has lived at the old homestead where he died, and was the oldest inhabitant of the place. He was an active and earnest citizen, and in the early days of Chicago did much to promote her interests. For many years he has resided at his home in Oakton, sustained in his old age by his only surviving child, Mrs. Anna C. Gibbs. It may be remarked that the home of the old gentleman was last summer entered by burglars, who very much terrified their inmates. He at that time affirmed that the affair would hasten his death. Major Mulford was very highly esteemed in the community where he lived, and in fact by all by whom he was known. The funeral, of which farther notice will be given, will be held to- morrow.
