Miscellanous Obituaries 1897 - Cook County, Illinois _________________________________________________________________________ CHICAGO TRIBUNE 16 APRIL 1897 PAGE 5, COLUMN 4 DEATH OF SILAS NEWTON BROOKS For Twenty-six Years a Resident and Prominent Business-Man of Chicago Silas Newton Brooks died at his home, No. 271 Warren avenue at an early hour yesterday, after a short illness. He was 71 years old, having been born in Bernardston, Mass. on Dec. 20, 1825. He took an active interest in Massachusetts politics before coming to Chicago in 1871. From 1860 to 1870 he served in the Massachusetts Legislature. On coming to Chicago he became a member of the firm of Sargent Greenleaf & Brooks, which in January last was succeeded by S.N. Brooks & Co. Until a few weeks ago he was in good health and actively attending to the details of his business. Kidney trouble was the cause of his death. In 1849 Mr. Brooks married Miss Melissa Minerva Burrows in Massachusetts. Mrs. Brooks and four children survive him. Mr. Brooks was a director of the Mary Thompson Hospital, a member of the Church of the Redeemer, a Mason, and a former President of the Society of the Sons of Massachusetts. ________________________________________________________________________ CHICAGO TRIBUNE 18 APRIL 1897 DEATHS BROOKS - April 15.
