She was a relative of Commodore William Bainbridge, captor of the British frigate Java in the war of 1812. Her husband's grandfather, with whom she lived for several years, was a veteran of the war of the revolution. Mrs. Alton has been active in the work of the Methodist Episcopal church church all her life, and for many years was a leader in temperance work, serving as president of the South Side W. C. T. U,, and helping to organize the W. C. T. U. In North Dakota. She was born near Rome, N. Y., in 1826.
