Ward Ellis, the dentist, died yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock at his home, No. 9 Bryant avenue, after a sickness of three months. The funeral will take place at the First Baptist church, South Park avenue and Thirty-first street, at 1 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. Excelsior Lodge, I.O.O.F. and Wabansia Lodge F, and A, M will participate in the services. The interment will be at Oakwoods Cemetery. Dr. Ellis was born in Norwich, Conn, February 1828. He received his education in his native town and began the practice of dentistry at that place. He moved to Westmoreland, N.Y. shortly afterward and in 1851 went to California. He opened an office at Stockton, Cal and practiced at that place several years. He located in Chicago in 1857 and pursued the practice of his profession in this city up to the time of his illness. He was a prominent Odd-Fellow and had held the office of Grand Master, Grand Representative, and other positions of honor in that order. He was also prominent in the Masonic fraternity and was a member of the Knights of Pythias. Dr. Ellis was elected President of the California Pioneers' Association when that organization was first formed and held the position at the time of his death. He leaves a wife and one son.
