It was found hanging to a government bridge pier in the Mississippi river near East St. Louis. Joseph Martin, his father, learned of the finding of the body through an article in the Chicago papers, stating that the body of an unidentified boy apparently 18 years old had been found at a steamboat landing near East St. Louis. Through telegraphic communication identification of the body as that of his son has been established beyond doubt, he says. Young Martin had tattoo marks on both arms and these, though the body was badly decomposed, were found by the police. The body had gone through the controlling works at Lockport, thence through the Illinois river into the Mississippi.
