Obituary of Mrs Mary Hunt LOOMIS, Cook County, Illinois This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Mary Gilmore I recently found an article on page one (1) of the "Auburn Daily Advertiser," Auburn, N.Y., Saturday October 8, 1910 Chicago, Oct. 8 - Mrs. Mary Hunt LOOMIS, Chicago society woman and heroine of the Civil War died yesterday leaving a fortune of $1, 2500,000.00 to the Loomis Institute, an educational insitution at Windsor, Conn., founded 18 years ago by Mrs. Loomis's husband and his brothers and a sister. Mrs. Loomis who was the widow of Colonel John Mason Loomis, was born in Sherburne, N.Y. (Chenango Co.) 81 years ago. She was married to Colonel Loomis in New York 60 years ago, coming to Chicago immediately after the wedding. At the outbreak of the Civil War she accompanied her husband to the front on the Union side and became head of a company of Red Cross nurses. Colonel Loomis died 10 years ago. He had no children and the death of Mrs. Loomis removes the last member of his family. His brothers and sisters were James C.
