Orville Olcott was born at Lenox, Madison County, N.Y., in 1814. At an early age he went to Utica, N.Y., where he learned the business of canal boat building. He succeeded to the business of his uncle at age 21, and during the next thirteen years he constructed many passenger and freight-boats plying on the Erie Canal. His first vote was cast in 1836 for William Henry Harrison. Twice a member of the Common Council of Utica he took an active interest in politics and again championed the cause of Harrison in 1840 when it was more successful. Obtaining a contract at Chicago to build a line of packet-boats, in 1848 he removed to this city and continued his residence here until his death. He has been interested in three of the five dry docks since constructed in Chicago, and some of the oldest boats now sailing on the lakes were built under his supervision. He was one of the original members of the Chicago Board of Trade. Twice married, he has had six sons, four of whom survive him.
