NILES THEODORE QUALES, PIONEER PHYSICIAN, DEAD. Aged Charitable Worker Was Decorated by King Haakon of Norway, Emigrated to Chicago in 1859. Dr. Niles Theodore Quales, 83 years old, a pioneer of Chicago and the Nestor of Scandiravian-American medical men, died yesterday at his residence at 1951 Fowler street. Death was due to pneumonia and old age. He was the founder of the Norwegian Old People's home at Norwood Park. Four years ago King Haakon of Norway decorated him with the Order of St. Olaf in recognition of his services in behalf of the poor. Born in Hardanger, Norway, Jan. 17, 1831, he attended school in his native land and in Denmark. In 1839 he came to Chicago in company with Iver Lawson, father of Victor F. Lawson. He served in company B. First Illinois artillery, in the civil war. He graduated from Rush Medical college in 1867. He was city physician during the smallpox epidemic in Chicago from 1868 to 1870 and was surgeon of the United States Marine hospital until the year of 1871. Funeral services will be held at Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 at the Wicker Park English Lutheran church. North Hoyne avenue and Le Moyne street. Interment will be at Mount Olive cemetery. Members of the Scandinavian-American Medical society, of which Dr. Quales was an honorary member, will be pallbearers. __________________________ Death Notice from Chicago Daily Tribune - May 24, 1914 Dr. Niles T.
