L. VAN PATTEN, WORLD WAR VETERAN, ANSWERS FINAL TAPS Dr. Clyde Leslie Van Patten, a veteran of the World War and a charter member of Hanford Post, American Legion, Cedar Rapids, died at his home in Cedar Rapids at 9 o'clock Friday evening after a brief illness. Dr. Van Patten was born July 21, 1888, at Monmouth, Iowa, where he attended public school. Following his graduation from the Monmouth High School he entered Hahnnaman College of Medicine and Surgery in Chicago, where he received his degree and was appointed on the surgical staff of the Dr. Lee hospital at Rochester, N. Y. Later for a number of years he practiced at Anamosa until his entry into the U. S. Army during the World War, where he served nineteen months, twelve of which were overseas as Captain of the Medical Corps in the 404th Telegraph Battalion. Following his discharge he served five years in the Public Health Bureau at Ashville, N. C.; Washington, D. C. and Denver, Colorado. For the last four years he practiced medicine in Cedar Rapids. Surviving are his wife Nina E. and daughter Virginia, at home; his mother, Mrs. Jessie Waugh and a sister, Mrs. Louis Zak, both of Monmouth, Iowa. A son preceded him in death in 1930. Brief funeral services were held in the Barta Chapel, Cedar Rapids at 12:15 Sunday, conducted by the Rev. F. E. Mastin of Monmouth. Further services were held in the Monmouth church at 3 p.m. Songs were sung by Mrs. Lee Allen, Mrs. R. C. Best and Millicent Teeple, accompanied by Mrs. S. A. Orris. Burial was made in the Monmouth cemetery where Hanford Post, American Legion had charge of services.
