R. GOODWIN, farmer, P. O. Palestine, was born August 3, 1835, in Decatur County, Ind. He is a son of Nelson Goodwin, born in Kentucky. He was a physician by occupation, and married Miss Sarah Travis. Mr. S. R. Goodwin was educated in Decatur County, Ind. In 1854, he moved to this county, where he enlisted in the summer of 1862, in the Ninety-eighth Illinois Infantry Volunteers, Company D. His regiment was afterward mounted and did some hard fighting till the close of the war. Mr. Goodwin was joined in matrimony, August 30, 1867, to Mary M. Pifer, born May 30, 1844, on La Motte Prairie; she is a daughter of Joseph Pifer, born September 24, 1819, in Virginia. He was married, August 25, 1842, to Margaret Walker, born January 23, 1822. Mr. Pifer died January 1, 1876, and his wife died November 5, 1878. Mrs. Goodwin is the mother of two children-Maggie E., born July 14, 1868, she died October 2, 1869; and Harlin Leslie, born February 20, 1870. Mr. and Mrs. Goodwin are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He is identified with the Republican party, is a "Knight of Honor," and is a member of the "G. A. R."
