C. HASKETT, merchant, Palestine, was born near Hutsonville, Crawford County, Ill.; son of John Haskett, who was born in North Carolina. The father was a farmer by occupation, and at an early age came to Crawford County, Ill., where he bought land near Hutsonville, on which he lived till his death, which occurred in the spring of 1841. He was married to Miss Nancy West, born in 1810, in North Carolina, and now living near Hutsonville; she is the mother of six children, four of whom are now living. Mr. E. C. Haskett went to school a short time in Hutsonville, but is mainly self-educated; remained on the homestead till he was sixteen years old, when he entered a general store in Hutsonville, clerking there six years, and one year in Melrose, Clark County; from there he came to Palestine, and in the spring of 1852, commenced to clerk for the Preston Bros.; in 1855, he became a partner; in 1865, he and his brothers bought out the Preston interest, at this time they did one of the largest business in the State. In 1876, they dissolved partnership. Mr. Haskett was married twice, his first wife was Miss E. A. Kitchell, born December, 1827; she died In 1867, and was the mother of four children-Catlin P., Ida B., Fanny B. and John C. His second wife was Mrs. Sarah E. Kitchell, who was born May 30, 1832, in Palestine. Her father was Dr. R. H. Mauzy, once an officer in the Black Hawk war; he died in 1834, in Palestine. Mrs. Haskett had four children-Richard H. and Garvin, by her first husband; Edmund C. and Sarah E., by her second husband, Mr. Haskett opened a general store in 1880.
