His parents died when he was quite young, and he was taken to Licking County, Ohio, in 1824, by an uncle. Here he was married, August 18, 1842, to Miss Mary Randall, and engaged in farming. In 1847, he removed to Crawford County, Ill., and purchased a farm of 120 acres, in Licking Township, which he improved and sold and purchased another farm in the township, of 300 acres, mostly improved land, on which he had good buildings and an excellent orchard. In 1871, he removed to Robinson, and soon after engaged in the farm implement business, purchasing a residence in town. He has a family of six children-William J., Mrs. Caroline M.
