Meet of Old Vets, Crawford County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 2000 Cindy McCachern Note:  I tried to copy all of these names correctly, but the text that I was working from was very hard to read.   Meet of the Old Vets   The Annual Reunion a Pleasant Affair for the Boys   They Recount Old Stories   And are Pleased with the Talks of Good Speakers   All things taken into consideration, the annual reunion of the Crawford County Veteran Association may be pronounced quite a success, even though it lacked in attendance, and in an array of speeches that have characterized like former occasions.   It was not expected that there would be much attendance on Wednesday, the opening day and there was nothing on the program until the night camp fire.  There was quite a gathering in the park at the grand stand, and the address of welcome by Mayor Eagleton was replete with eloquent words of praise, fitly spoken, of the heroism and valor of the men who were the saviors of the nation when the disruption of the Union was sought.   The band was present and furnished excellent music Wednesday evening and on Thursday.  The old veterans enjoyed their coming together, and reminiscent stories, told in groups of a half dozen from a company of swapping episodes that occured in different regiments and different fields, and it is the living these old days, scenes and incidents over again that is the great attractive features of these reunions.   Thursday morning Congressman F. S. Dickson, who was a soldier in the Spanish-American war, was the speaker, and for about an hour he held his audience spellbound by his matchless eloquence, completely captivating his auditors, as was proven by the repeated cheering that his speech evoked.  At its conclusion, he held a reception on the stand and about every one in the audience came forward to shake hands with him.   In the afternoon, Rev. C. T. Phillips, who was a soldier in the 63rd Illinois, delivered a most excellent address.  He was followed by Rev. M. V. hathaway a soldier of the 44th Indiana, in a spirited address.   At a business meeting of the Comrades in the afternoond, it was voted to hold the next reunion at Palestine, and the following officers were elected.   Colonel--J. Wm. Jones Lieut. Col.--John W. Leaverton Major--Perry Brimberry Quartermaster--Presley Carver Surgeon--Dr. Wm. Eaton Chaplain--Rev. C. T. Phillips   At night there was a good audience present to hear the address of Dr. M. D. Foster of Olney.  The doctor made a good speech, though not as eloquent as some, what was lacking in this respect was fully made up in historical statement of facts as to the achievements of the volunteer soldier in all ___, and especially the members of the G. A. R. in the war of the rebellion, and of the progress and development of our country.   T. J. Newlin and J. C. Maxwell were called on, and responded in appropriate talks.  Judge Crowley excused himself from a speech by setting up the ice cream to the wives and daughters of the veterns.   A little reception was held at the stand for Dr. Foster, at which a number came forward to congratulate him on his excellent talk, and with this the reunion of the Association for 1906 was at an end.   One hundred and fourteen soliders registered, being as follows.  Where state is not given regiment was from Illinois:   John Kaley, Hosp.
