Obituary of Charles Marion Stifle, Crawford County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 1999 Cindy McCachern From the Oblong Oracle Charles Marion Stifle, the youngest of ten children born to Stephen and Mary Stifle, was born in Athen county, Ohio, Jan 23, 1848. He did Sept. 12, 1930, aged 82 years, 7 months and 19 days. In the smae year of his birth in September he came with his father's family to Illinois and settled northeast of Oblong, in what is known as the Dogwood neighborhood. In this vicinity he spent most of his life engaged in farming. On the 23rd of January 1869 he was united in marriage with Isabel Lancaster. To this union were born two children: Rexa, at home and Robert of Licking township. On March 17, 1873 his wife Isabel died and left him with two children to meet the demands of home life. On the 17th of May, 1874 he was married to Mary Jane Potts. To this union were born three children: Mrs. Dora Pratt of Orlando, Fla.; Cora, who died in infancy, and Edwin G. Stifle of Robinson, Ill. On the 29th of Sept., 1878 while enroute with his family to make his home in a distant state, he was again bereaved by the loss of his companion and again faced the task of caring for his children. He grew to manhood in the midst of hardships of his time and learned well the lesson of thrift, a thing which is so necessary in these days in which we live. In the active days of his life he was a member of and ardently supported all of the organizations for the betterment of agriculture. During the World War he was one of the committee's most liberal givers to the charity of a war torn world with both his means and sympathy. None knew like his children and grandchildren the love and kindness of his great heart, as was shown by his contributions and liberality in sickness and bereavement. In addition to his own immediate family he took into his home a grand niece, Esther Stifle, now the wife of Gerald Hall, who also shared his love and benevolent spirit. The deceased leaves besides his children, eight grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren. Charles Marion Stifle was a pioneer in this great state of Illinois. He came when it was one vast stretch of prairies and forests. He understood its growth and with eager interest watched its development. Along with other sturdy pioneers from the same great state he labored to make his vicinity a good place in which to live. He wrought well. Peace be to his memory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations or persons.
