Obituary of Elmer CHIDDIX, Crawford County, Illinois This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Crawford County Web Site I have no connection to this family. ELMER CHIDDIX Elmer Chiddix, age 24 son of Wm. Chiddix , a prosperous farmer who lives about 8 miles south of here, while under the influence of that awful demon, whiskey, last Sunday evening shot himself. The gun which he used ,shoots an explosive ball and it broke a hole in the front part of his skull three inches square, the ball dividing into 3 pieces and breaking thru the back part of his skull. He had been out about the barn where he had imbibed quite freely of whiskey. He rushed into the house and told his mother that he was going to kill himself, turned and ran to his room and before Mrs. Chiddix could realize the importance of the threat she heard the report of the gun, and ran up at once to where he was found that he had made good the threat. Drs. Ikemire and Midgett were called but by the time they reached the Chiddix home he was beyond all medical skill. He died at 11:05 PM when Coroner Dr. Parkinson of Oblong was summoned and arrived about 3:30 AM. He soon impaneled a jury and held and an inquest which resulted of suicide. He leaves a father and mother, 2 sisters, one at home and one in Montana, two brother, one at home and one in Texas. This dreadful tragedy brings again that awful hell hole, Bright Light, which runs in open defiance of the laws of God and man. This den of iniquity, this cess pool of sin, this hell on earth has certainly run long enough and if the officers of the law will not do their duty then it is time for the decent people of this community to take about 50 pounds of dynamite and blow this contemptible thing square into hell where it belongs.
