Obituary of Emma York, Crawford County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 2000 Cindy McCachern Obituary of Emma York 22 November 1906, Palestine (IL) Reporter   Emma York Burned to Death   An extremely sad death was that of little Emma York which occurred at the home of her parents on North Rush street at 6:45 p.m., Monday. The death of the little one resulted from the effects of burns received by her about 12:45 p.m., of the same day.  At that time Emma and two younger children were alone in the front room of the family dwelling.  Mrs. York being absent of the home of Dink Walters while Charles York was at the barn, having been called there to look after his team.  The little girl was playing about the room in which was a heating stove, the door of which stood open and was just the right height to communicate the flames to the little one's clothing and it is this that it is supposed she caught fire.  As soon as her clothing began to blaze, she ran out into the yard and started toward the barn to attract the attention of her father.  He hearing her screams ran to her as did also Joe Yates, who resides near, and W. J. Richey and Lis Wilson, who happened to be passing at the time.  The flames were extinguished as rapidly as possible, but not until the little ones clothing had been practically burned from its body.  The body from the waist up was badly burned as were also the arms, while the face was blackened to such an extent as to almost render it unrecognizable. Dr. R. L. Gordon was hastily summoned and dressed the burns, but the injuries inflicted were too severe to permit of recovery and the child died at 6:45 p.m. Monday night after an afternoon of great suffering.   Emma would have been six years of age next February and is the second child of Charles and Mae York, who resided for some time on the Woodworth farm west of town and who moved last Spring to their present residence just west of the stockyards on Rush street.  three other children survive, one a boy, Earl, about seven years of age and two girls, both younger than the deceased.   The funeral was conducted from the house yesterday morning at 10 o'clock.  Rev. O. L. Markman officiating, and interment was in the Palestine cemetery.   While endeavoring to extinguish the flames, Mr. Charles York sustained severe burns about his hands as well as other parts of his body, his clothing being burned thru in many places. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- USGENWEB NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by other organizations or persons.
