Obituary of James Bennett, Crawford County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 1999 Cindy McCachern Robinson Constitution, 5 May 1915 The funeral of James Bennett, who died Wednesday of last week at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Malcolm Knight, in Hutsonville township near West York, was held at 11 o'clock Friday morning at the Bailiff church. He had lived in the same township the greater part of his life. He was the oldest man in the township, being 93 years, 3 months and 5 days old. He was born on a farm near York February 25, 1822, where he and his mother kept an inn, at which many notable people stopped on their way to the land office at Palestine, among them being the Honorable Henry Clay. He was a farmer and also operated a threshing machine for 18 years in the old days of the horse power, making many friends and acquaintances throughout Clark, Crawford and Sullivan counties.
