Obituary of John C FOX, Crawford County, Illinois This file was contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives by: Margaret Fox-Jackson John C. Fox, aged 81 years, who died at Robinson, Illinois, on March 10th, 1922, at his home near Robinson, Illinois. He volunteered In the Civil War in 1861 in Co. C 58th Indiana Vol. Inf. Regt. And re- enlisted as a veteran January 1864. He was married to Miss Mary J. Wilson in Knox County, Indiana, on March 29th, 1864, while on a veteran furlough. He was in some very hard battles, namely: Shiloh, Tenn., Stone River and Chickamauga, where he was taken prisoner and assigned to Old Libby Prison and later exchanged. He did honorable service in defense of his country. Was discharged in 1865. He was a member of G.A.R. Post No. 171 Dept. of Illinois; also a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Robinson. He passed out of this life believing in the hope of eternal life and the resurrection and judgment of all humanity, where Jesus Christ our Judge shall call the roll and all who are faithful shall hear that welcome applaudit, 'Come ye blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world." Burial took place in the city cemetery at Robinson, Ill., by the side of his son Johnny, who was killed some years ago. Services at the grave were conducted by the G.A.R. Mr. Fox leaves a widowed mother of five sons and one daughter, all were present but one, who mourn their loss. Hosts of friends and neighbors sympathize with the immediate family in this their bereavement. They should not "mourn as those who have no hope." He was a kind and affectionate husband and a kind father, was a trustworthy citizen, honorable in his living and very much entitled to credit for truth and varacity. May he rest in peace. This was written by his Comrade, who was at and in the battle of Shiloh, Tenn., April 6 and 7th, 1862; and know him as a neighbor for 40 or more years, as such. We shall miss him but we hope our loss will be his gain. Blessed be the name of the Lord.
