Obituary of Jane Eliza Magill, Crawford County, Illinois Contributed for use in the USGenWeb Archives Copyright 2000 Karen Magill Swain Jane Eliza (Lillie) Farrell, daughter of Robert Farrell was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Feb 17,1858, while the family, who were newly arrived from Ireland, were making their home in America. Soon after her birth the family returned to Ireland, remaining until Lillie was about five or six years of age, when the family again came to America. Enroute here the vessel on which they were passengers was shipwrecked off Cape Elizabeth, Newfoundland, the family escaping in the life boats, leaving all their possessions on the wrecked vessel. They stopped a while in Cincinnati, Ohio, later coming down the Ohio and up the Wabash river on a flat boat, and landed not far from Heights Ferry in the middle of the winter where they were met by Samuel Richey with his big farm sled. They made their home with Mr. and Mrs. Richey until their new home was ready for them on the Cooper farm southeast of Swearingen Chapel, later moving to a farm one half mile west of Wesley Chapel. They resided there several years then moved to the Farrell home on the Crawford-Lawrence County line near Canaan Church. She was married to Marquis Allen Magill Jan.6, 1880 and he came to live on the farm which has been her home for more than 50 years. To them ten children were born, all of whom are living, namely: Laurence, of Flora, Ill,; Nell Kent of Flat Rock; Frank, of Palestine; Fred, of Lawrenceville; Mary Tohill, of Flat Rock; Laura Wesner, of Palestine; Chester, of near Flat Rock; Ruth, at home; Bernice Nash, Palestine Rural Route. There are 30 living grandchildren and one great grandchild. She is also survived by three brothers and two sisters:Harry, Oakland,Ca; Rev. John B.,Olney Ill.; Ada Pinkstaff, Azusa, Ca.; Laura Cannon, Flat Rock, Il.; and William, of Vincennes, Ind. She was preceded in death by five brothers and sisters, and by her companion who passed away December 21,1928. She became a member of the Wesley Chapel Methodist Church soon after her marriage and remained constant and faithful until death. Hers was a sociable and friendly disposition and she very much enjoyed her neighbors and her large family and was always glad to have them in her home. She was privileged to have her ten children with her in her closing days. Her going was peaceable and she slipped away at 8:30 in the evening of Monday, October 27, 1930, aged 72 yars ,8months and 10 days. The funeral services were held at Wesley Chapel, Rev. P.O.Anderson pastor in charge, assisted by Rev. C.C. Hall, Rev.
